Fit Together in Action July News Partner Highlight- Camp Moe Fit Fun YMCA’s Camp Moe, a day camp in Litchfield County for boys and girls aged 5-15 years, has been providing campers recreational activities and social skills for over 10 years. This year, I had the pleasure of conducting an eight-week “Fun Fit” program through a partnership with YMCA and Fit Together. Fit Together in Action June News Partner Highlight- Southwest School Asphalt Activities Project – Fun Playground Time! In the Fall of 2021, Eric Mahar, Physical Education teacher at Southwest and Forbes elementary schools, proposed a project to the Building Healthier Communities Fund Advisors which would offer students a variety of constructive alternatives for physical activity when outside on the schools’ blacktops. Since this proposal was in alignment with Fit Together and Building Healthier Communities Fund missions, a grant was awarded for the stencils and other supplies, with the condition that they are shared with other schools. Fit Together in Action April News Partner Highlight: School Gardens Spring is here and school gardens have begun!  We have five Fit Together partners who are in full swing with their plantings and include Brooker Memorial, Gilbert, Vogel-Wetmore, Torringford, Goshen, Warren, and James Morris. The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul. Fit Together in Action March News Partner Highlight: Litchfield Center School Fit Fun Bags Laura Pieger is a Fit Together partner and a teacher at Litchfield Center School. She applied for a Fit Together mini-grant in order to fund Fit Fun Bags. She shared with me the success they have had the first month of introducing the bags to the students and families! Fit Together in Action December 2022 News Fit Families Program This was Fit Together’s first in person Fit Families Program since COVID. We partnered with New Opportunities Inc., to offer a six week Wellness program for kids 6-10 years old and their parents/caregivers. Jessica Stewart, Fit Together’s coordinator and Caitlin Vinuelas, Northwest CT YMCA Branch Director were the facilitators. The program incorporated nutrition/physical activity/mental wellness for the entire family. Fit Together in Action August News Fit Together Partner Highlights- Gilbert School New Vegetable Garden This June Gilbert School students installed a new vegetable garden as one of a Fit Together min grant recipients. Ms. Frechette, a master gardener, volunteered to help with this project along with Mrs. Gilbert the school nurse and Fit Together wellness champion.  The students planted tomatoes, a variety of squash, green beans, pumpkins, and other vegetables.  Produce picked this summer is being donated to Winsted’s Open Door Soup Kitchen providing a wonderful nutritious resource to the community and families.  In the fall the produce will…

Fit Together in Action July News Fit Together Partner Highlights- Kordas Korner Preschool Kordas Korner Preschool is one of Fit Together’s newest 5210 Healthy Habits partner. They wanted to kick off the initiative with a Healthy Summer 5210 Challenge during camp to see how both students and teachers could meet their daily 5210 goals. Fit Together in Action June News Fit Together Partner Highlights- Vogel- Wetmore School Garden Students at Vogel-Wetmore School planted their school garden for the second time this spring. Courtney Quigley one of the school’s first grade teachers and Fit Together partners, reported that a year ago, they planted vegetables in three raised beds and plants for pollinators in two raised beds.  Families volunteered to care for the garden over the summer, and students returned in the fall to find bright zinnias and delicious vegetables waiting for them.  One first-grade student exclaimed, "I planted this basil from a tiny seed when…

Fit Together in Action May News   Fit Together Partner Highlights- Torringford Gaga Pits Torringford School was awarded a fall Fit Together mini grant to purchase materials to build a Gaga Pit for the students.  Jared Sheik the wood-making Torrington High School teacher and his students constructed the pit and now with the warmer weather the kids are finally able to use it.
