Fit Together in Action July News   Partner Highlights:  Summer Blender Bike Smoothies Fit Together recently purchased a “Rock the Bike Fender Blender,” which are stationary bicycles with a blender attached.  Peddling the bike operates the blender, which renders delicious smoothies with only a few healthy ingredients. Peddling a smoothie may seem like a small act, but for some people it will be their first time giving energy back, which can open the door to many other healthier choices that benefit fitness, health, and our community. Fit Together in Action May News Partner Highlights: Litchfield Center School During a recent visit to Litchfield Center School, teacher Laura Pieger demonstrated the school’s hydroponic tower garden, which was integrated into the students’ study of plants and growth cycles.  Mr. Olmstead, a science teacher at LCS, maintains the tower while the students enjoy observing its bounty of plants and herbs, as well as listening to the waterfall.  At the end of the school year, the harvest will be given to LCS teachers to enjoy. Fit Together in Action April Partner Highlights: Child Care Center Visits In anticipation of our Family Bicycle Rally on Saturday, May 4, I have been visiting our partner child care centers to demonstrate Strider balance bikes and emphasize the importance of bike helmet safety. The kids were very excited to try the Strider bikes and wear some very cool helmets. Spending time with these energetic youngsters and their teachers was a great way to reconnect and enjoy the outdoors. Fit Together in Action November News Healthy Changes Coming to Torrington Public Schools! Kristin Gagnon, the new Foodservice Manager for Torrington Public Schools, is supporting Fit Together’s mission by trying new healthier products and adding more fruits and vegetables to her recipes. Her team has created delicious new salads which include Boar’s Head meats for protein and local produce when available. Fit Together in Action October News Partner Highlight  Winchester Walks Research shows that movement breaks can help awaken the brain by increasing blood flow and activating learning centers.  Barbara Silvero, principal at Pearson School in Winsted, is incorporating these movement breaks every Monday through the “Winchester Walks” program. Teachers at Pearson and Hinsdale schools take their classes on a 10-minute walk up and down the hallways of each floor. Fit Together in Action September News Fall Harvest at Vogel-Wetmore Courtney Quigley our Fit Together teacher champion has been busy harvesting with the students of Vogel Wetmore School who were welcomed back this year by their thriving school garden! Courtney reports “in the first few weeks of school, students have looked at bright sunflowers and buzzing pollinators. They have enjoyed the aroma of lavender, basil, and sage. The students have picked and enjoyed tomatoes, green beans, and peppers.  They’ve helped with weeding, and have enjoyed sitting under trellises of vining cucumbers and pumpkins.”  The students will celebrate their garden at…

Fit Together in Action May News May: Torrington Middle School inspiring others to be healthier In 2018, Kara Centrella, a school nurse at Torrington Middle School, had a vision to create a fitness and nature trail that would be open to the community. The trail would be user-friendly and inclusive of all ages and skill levels. Having grown up in Torrington, it was very important to Kara that the trail to be a shared space for members of the community. Fit Together in Action March News Partner Highlight: Litchfield Center School Fit Fun Bags Laura Pieger is a Fit Together partner and a teacher at Litchfield Center School. She applied for a Fit Together mini-grant in order to fund Fit Fun Bags. She shared with me the success they have had the first month of introducing the bags to the students and families! Fit Together in Action February News  Partner Highlight: Vogel-Wetmore after School Program     Fitness Fun with Fit Together Jessica Stewart Fit Together’s Youth and Family Coordinator has been providing a Fitness Fun class twice a week at Vogel-Wetmore’s after-school program to kindergarteners. It's an hour long class that keeps the students moving with fun activities and games while learning the basics to exercises. Fit Together in Action January News Partner Highlight: Torrington Middle School Torrington Middle School (TMS) is one of Fit Together’s partner schools. TMS’s Fit Committee recently embarked on a fitness campaign called the 12 Days of Winter Fitness Challenge. The challenge started on December 7th and ended on December 22nd. Teachers, nurses, building administrators, and the TMS Fit Committee recorded and presented one fitness challenge daily to promote fitness and wellness to our students.
