Fit Together Highlight & Community Update HEAL Grant Applications Due 6/30! Don’t forget! We are still accepting grant applications for Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Projects! There is $10,000-$15,000 available for non-profit partners within Torrington and Winchester. Applications must detail how the funds will be used to promote increased physical activity and healthy eating choices in the community.  Full applications are due June 30, 2025. Funding for Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Projects - 2025 The Fit Together NWCT Steering Committee is seeking requests for proposals (grant applications) to award between $10,000-$15,000 to support community durational projects that improve physical activity and healthy eating choices. Proposal projects must serve to further Fit Together’s mission by enhancing the means and methods to promote better distribution of good health across the communities we serve. The proposals must align with Fit Together’s Healthy Eating and Active Living strategic priorities and demonstrate feasibility in advancing improvements in health and wellbeing. Fit Together in Action August News Blending Fun and Community This summer has been filled with sunshine, smiles, and a whole lot of smoothie making! We were thrilled to partner with Our Culture is Beautiful by bringing our blender bike to their Fun in the Park summer day camp at Jiggs Donahue Park. The children and their guardians had a great time sampling the smoothies they created by peddling the bike with just a few healthy ingredients. Fit Together in Action July News   Partner Highlights:  Summer Blender Bike Smoothies Fit Together recently purchased a “Rock the Bike Fender Blender,” which are stationary bicycles with a blender attached.  Peddling the bike operates the blender, which renders delicious smoothies with only a few healthy ingredients. Peddling a smoothie may seem like a small act, but for some people it will be their first time giving energy back, which can open the door to many other healthier choices that benefit fitness, health, and our community. Fit Together in Action June News Partner Highlights: Spring Fling at Warren Elementary! I recently checked in with Michele Ferrer, Fit Together champion and School Nurse at Warren Elementary School. To celebrate the end of the school year, Warren School held a “Spring Fling” event, which included fitness education and interactive craft projects.  The students enjoyed learning karate and yoga, then rotated through creative projects such as rock painting, creating walking sticks, making bird houses, making seed balls to plant, macramé, paper necklaces and tie dying. Fit Together in Action May News Partner Highlights: Litchfield Center School During a recent visit to Litchfield Center School, teacher Laura Pieger demonstrated the school’s hydroponic tower garden, which was integrated into the students’ study of plants and growth cycles.  Mr. Olmstead, a science teacher at LCS, maintains the tower while the students enjoy observing its bounty of plants and herbs, as well as listening to the waterfall.  At the end of the school year, the harvest will be given to LCS teachers to enjoy. Fit Together in Action April Partner Highlights: Child Care Center Visits In anticipation of our Family Bicycle Rally on Saturday, May 4, I have been visiting our partner child care centers to demonstrate Strider balance bikes and emphasize the importance of bike helmet safety. The kids were very excited to try the Strider bikes and wear some very cool helmets. Spending time with these energetic youngsters and their teachers was a great way to reconnect and enjoy the outdoors.
