Kristin Gagnon, the new Foodservice Manager for Torrington Public Schools, is supporting Fit Together’s mission by trying new healthier products and adding more fruits and vegetables to her recipes. Her team has created delicious new salads which include Boar’s Head meats for protein and local produce when available. Kristin is highly motivated to provide new healthy eating opportunities for students by encouraging them to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet and experience healthy foods they have not previous tried. Fit Together in Action October News Partner Highlight  Winchester Walks Research shows that movement breaks can help awaken the brain by increasing blood flow and activating learning centers.  Barbara Silvero, principal at Pearson School in Winsted, is incorporating these movement breaks every Monday through the “Winchester Walks” program. Teachers at Pearson and Hinsdale schools take their classes on a 10-minute walk up and down the hallways of each floor. Fit Together in Action September News Fall Harvest at Vogel-Wetmore Courtney Quigley our Fit Together teacher champion has been busy harvesting with the students of Vogel Wetmore School who were welcomed back this year by their thriving school garden! Courtney reports “in the first few weeks of school, students have looked at bright sunflowers and buzzing pollinators. They have enjoyed the aroma of lavender, basil, and sage. The students have picked and enjoyed tomatoes, green beans, and peppers.  They’ve helped with weeding, and have enjoyed sitting under trellises of vining cucumbers and pumpkins.”  The students will celebrate their garden at…

Fit Together in Action July News Partner Highlight- Camp Moe Fit Fun YMCA’s Camp Moe, a day camp in Litchfield County for boys and girls aged 5-15 years, has been providing campers recreational activities and social skills for over 10 years. This year, I had the pleasure of conducting an eight-week “Fun Fit” program through a partnership with YMCA and Fit Together. Fit Together in Action June News Partner Highlight- Southwest School Asphalt Activities Project – Fun Playground Time! In the Fall of 2021, Eric Mahar, Physical Education teacher at Southwest and Forbes elementary schools, proposed a project to the Building Healthier Communities Fund Advisors which would offer students a variety of constructive alternatives for physical activity when outside on the schools’ blacktops. Fit Together in Action May News May: Torrington Middle School inspiring others to be healthier In 2018, Kara Centrella, a school nurse at Torrington Middle School, had a vision to create a fitness and nature trail that would be open to the community. The trail would be user-friendly and inclusive of all ages and skill levels. Having grown up in Torrington, it was very important to Kara that the trail to be a shared space for members of the community.
