Fit Together Partner Highlights- Vogel-Wetmore Celebrates Local Harvest

Vogel-Wetmore elementary school is one of Fit Together’s Gold Status partners celebrated the local bounty harvest this month both with a farmer visit and school garden celebration.  Torrington Public Schools received a local produce grant for the school year, providing funds to purchase local fruits and veggies for the school meal program.  On Friday October 7, Vogel-Wetmore students had a special visitor from one of the participating farms during their lunch. Farmer Stephen from Chanticleer Acres spoke to the students as they came in for their meal which included local apples from March Farms.

A week later students gathered to celebrate the harvest of their school garden. Courtney Quigley a teacher and one of the schools wellness champions reported that “students planted the garden in the spring, including tomatoes, carrots, kale, and cucumbers.  At the Harvest Festival, they explored the garden using the 5 senses, painted with dried stalks, and weighed the crops.  They tasted carrots, kale chips, tomatoes, and cookies seasoned with sage, all prepared with food from the garden.  They plucked seeds out of dried marigolds, green beans, and milkweed to replant next spring. Students in the K-3 school also looked for butterflies, bees, and other insects in their pollinator garden.  Vogel-Wetmore School is a great place to grow!”

Worksite Wellness- Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is breast cancer awareness month, and October 21 is National Mammography Day.  Ladies, check in with your “qualified” work pals to make sure they have had their annual mammograms.  Gentlemen, check in with the women you love to make sure they have been screened.  If you are an employer, offering an incentive to pay your employees for the time they need to get to and from wellness physicals and screenings is a way to show how much you value their health.
