Fit Together Partner Highlights

Early Childcare- Brooker Memorial

A group of nursery school students at Brooker Memorial, one of Fit Together gold partner sites, love experimenting with starting seeds in organic eggshells. Charlene Lee Child Care Director said the kids have tried manure pots, peat pots, and pots handmade from newspaper. This year they are getting sugar snap peas planted and will transfer them into their outdoor beds once the warmer weather is finally here.

School Highlight- Litchfield Center School

Litchfield Center School, a new Fit Together partner, recently held a school wide two day STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) event. Laura Pieger one of the school’s instructional assistants and wellness champion taught one of the activities- Yoga for Kids.  She discussed the importance of mental health and physical health by eating healthy, exercising and stretching and taking time to relax and “calm down”.   She also brought the students through a mini themed yoga lesson adventure and gave each student laminated yoga pose flip cards as a take-away that they could share with their peers and families!

Worksite- Winsted Senior Center

The Winsted Senior Center is a Fit Together 5210 Gold Level Partner in our Workplace Wellness Program.

With an easing of COVID restrictions and springtime in the air, there are lots of opportunities to embracing healthy living at the Winsted Senior Center. We recently caught up with Director Jennifer Kelley and talked about the ways they are living the 5210 message of fitness and nutrition.

  • Along with offering healthy menu items and always having fresh fruit available, they are also decreasing the amount of sweets in the dining room.
  • Plans to expand the garden are under way, with raised aluminum planters soon being installed to increase the fresh produce grown on site and opportunities for accessible gardening.
  • The facility uses a filtration system to provide access to high quality drinking water.
  • The well-attended Senior Enrichment Program supports the mind/body connection through yoga and Qi Gong classes and even a drumming circle.

With fitness, nutrition and fresh water covered, we then asked about seniors’ screen habits.  Jennifer noted “that’s just not an issue” and that “the biggest win is seeing older adults setting good examples for their grandchildren”.
