 Fit Together 5210 Highlights: It’s all about BIKING

To promote widespread recreation and fitness for our children, adults and families in our community Fit Together has launched a Bike Rack Sponsorship program and is hosting a Family Bicycle Rally in September.

BIKE RACK PROGRAM

Twenty sponsored bike racks will be placed throughout Torrington and Winsted to help promote physical activity and provide safe and convenient places for people to park their bikes while they do errands, go to the park, stop at the library or go to school. The bike racks are intended to catch someone’s attention and gently encourage cycling in our communities, while being customized to highlight the person or business who has purchased the bike rack. The school locations include; Torrington Middle School, Torrington High School, the Gilbert School, Pearson School and the Northwestern Community College. You will also see racks along the Sue Grossman trail, at the Armory, Teen Center, Torrington Savings Bank, Resha beach, Winsted Community Health and Wellness, and Northwest YMCA Winsted and Torrington locations.

 FAMILY BICYCLE RALLY

Mark your calendar Sunday September 22 10am-12pm at the Sue Grossman trail

This free family event will start at the RBC parking lot at 2788 Winsted Road Torrington. On the trail complete the 5 mile loop and enter to win prizes or custom your ride less or more.

We will have snack stops along the trail, strider balance bikes for kids ages 2-6, loaner bikes and an obstacle course. No registration required just come and enjoy the fall morning with family and friends!

Torrington Road Race- KIDS FUN RUN sponsored by Fit Together

On August 11 Fit Together sponsored the Kids Fun Run at the 48th annual Torrington Donors Week Road race. Jessica Stewart; Fit Together 5210 coordinator said, “It was a super beautiful day, we had fifteen kids of all ages came out to run four laps around Coe Park.” Fit-Together had the privilege of working closely with the Torrington Road Race to help organize the race and to provide Fit Together 5210 messaging and tips. “We love being at these great events and it allows us to continue to spread our message “reported Jessica. “ Next year we hope to have even more families involved in such a great community event.”

 

Fit Together Gold Partner Spotlight

GOLD Partner sites are celebrated for proactively implementing evidence-based strategies to increase daily healthy habits.

This Month’s GOLD partner spotlight goes to Charlene Lee, Child Care Director at Brooker Memorial. “Brooker has always had a focus on healthy eating and our children’s garden program says Lee.

5210 fits right in with what we are doing and reinforces the message for our families. The 5210 resources also helped us with new ideas for adding more physical activity to the children’s daily schedule.”

Recipe of the Month: Chocolate Zucchini Cupcakes

 Zucchinis are abundant during the summer months. This breakfast treat will be sure to get the whole family up and energized to start their day.

Ingredients

1 cup grated zucchini
1 cup applesauce, unsweetened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
¼ cup honey
¼ cup brown sugar
1 cup whole-wheat flour
½ cup all-purpose, unbleached flour
¼ cup flaxseed, ground
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
½ cup unsweetened cocoa

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and line muffin cups with paper or silicone liners.
  2. Put grated zucchini in paper towels or a clean cloth and squeeze out as much water as possible. Set aside.
  3. In large mixing bowl, combine applesauce, vanilla extract, and ¼ cup honey and stir thoroughly.
  4. Add flours, baking soda, baking powder, flaxseed, spices, and mix well. Add cocoa and mix thoroughly.
  5. Add zucchini and stir thoroughly.
  6. Fill paper liners with chocolate zucchini batter to ¾ full. Bake for approximately 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center of cupcake.
