In northwest Connecticut, the Fit Together NWCT public health initiative is working to build healthiest kids, families, and communities by helping to identify policy changes and environmental improvements in the cities of Torrington and Winsted that will help make the healthy choice the easy choice. It now has two new staff members to help fulfil its mission and goals.

Fit Together co-chairs Leslie Polito, of Torrington Area Health District, and Greg Brisco, of Northwest CT YMCA, are pleased to announce that Carla Angevine, MS, RDN, has been selected to be the initiative’s new Executive Director. She will serve as administrator and direct program development with the initiative’s Steering Committee, community partners and the public to reach a greater number of individuals.

Jessica Stewart, left, and Carla Angevine have been selected to lead Fit Together – a healthy eating and active living initiative for kids in Northwest Connecticut.

In addition, Carla serves as the Community Wellness Coordinator at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital where she develops and conducts community education programs, promotes employee wellness, and oversees the nutrition therapy in CHH primary care settings.  She is also a certified health coach and fitness instructor and has specialized certifications in adult, adolescent and child weight management. Carla received her Master’s Degree in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from Columbia Teachers College.

Also joining the team at Fit Together is Jessica Stewart, a Certified Fitness Trainer at Northwestern CT YMCA who will be serving as the 5210 Coordinator.  In this role, she will be working to promote Let’s Go! 5210 healthy messaging developed by Maine Health to local corporations, families, schools, pediatricians and child care centers. She has studied Human Services at the University of Connecticut and Northwestern Community College.

“We are very excited to have Carla and Jessica’s talent and passion working on behalf of the community in these new roles.  As we broaden our mission to be more oriented toward prevention and wellness, all we serve will benefit from their work and our commitment to building the healthiest community possible.” said Brian Mattiello, Hartford HealthCare Northwest Regional Vice President for Strategy and Community Development.

“Jessica’s spirit and Carla’s expertise and experience as a member of Fit Together’s Steering Committee from the very beginning, create a vibrant team that will surely energize our communities around healthy living,” said Greg Brisco, CEO of the Northwest CT YMCA.

Formed in 2011, founding members Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Northwest CT YMCA, Torrington Area Health District, and the United Way of NWCT created Fit Together to effectively promote healthy habits and choices of area residents through collective action and the efficient utilization of local expertise and resources.
