About Us

About Fit Together

Fit Together is Northwest CT’s Healthy Eating & Active Living Initiative!

Formed in 2011, we are a volunteer-based, community collaborative of concerned citizens and partner organizations focused on improving the health and well-being of Northwestern Connecticut. Meet Our Team.

Our Mission

To build the healthiest kids, families, and communities in Northwest Connecticut through sustainable strategies that foster healthy eating and active living (HEAL).

Our Dream

To make Torrington & Winsted the healthiest communities in Connecticut. We recognize that our children are our future. We are dedicated to supporting them in living long, healthy, and productive lives.

Our History

Fit Together was established in 2011 when founding members from Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Northwest CT YMCA, Torrington Area Health District, and the United Way of NWCT combined their expertise and resources to identify and implement environmental and social improvements in support of the health of our Torrington and Winsted communities. Our efforts have focused on local schools, daycare centers, pediatrician offices, senior centers, and vital community organizations, as well as directly on families and individuals of all ages.

Our Initiatives

Fit Together was inspired by “5-2-1-0” Let’s Go! – a comprehensive childhood obesity prevention program established by MaineHealth. We continue to use 5-2-1-0 as our central messaging for making the healthiest choice the easiest choice. Learn more about 5-2-1-0 here.

Since 2011, we have completed a wide variety of NWCT community initiatives, including nutrition education programs for children and families, annual mini-grants for healthy eating active living (HEAL) projects, the installation of 6 pieces of exercise equipment and signage along the Sue Grossman Greenway (with 2 more to come), annual community events, a monthly health newsletter of shared resources, and more. For more details, please see our Annual Reports.

Our Current Plan / Goals

Our current focus for 2025 and beyond is to:

  • Increase communication efforts and content development for our community around healthy eating and active living (HEAL).
  • Implement durational environmental change projects including additional exercise equipment along the Sue Grossman Greenway, bike racks throughout the community, and more.
  • Engage in healthy eating and active living (HEAL) policy advocacy.
  • Support community-led healthy eating/physical activity projects through annual grants.
