One Hour of Physical Activity

Get at Least 1 Hour of Physical Activity Every Day

Research overwhelmingly shows that physical activity is essential for weight management and overall health. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, various cancers, and osteoporosis. Regular activity is also one of the most effective ways to improve mood and mental health.

Regular physical activity is especially important for children, as it establishes a healthy habit that can impact them for life. It doesn’t have to be complicated — every little bit of movement helps! [See full Physical Activity Recommendations from the CDC.]

11 Ideas for Moving More

  1. Take walks around your neighborhood, at a local park, or on a local walking trail.
  2. Park further away when running errands.
  3. Walk the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
  4. Take activity breaks throughout the day — do 25 reps of squats, leg lifts, twists, push-ups, or arm raises.
  5. Combine exercise with other fun activities like watching a movie or a favorite show.
  6. Look for free activities in the community. There are lots of healthy activities at local libraries or through the parks and rec department of your town.
  7. Join a sport or enroll in a local gym like the YMCA.
  8. Play an active video game that requires movement.
  9. Try exercise DVDs from your local library to learn what activities you like best.
  10. Invest in simple exercise equipment so activity feels more fun such as a rebounder (trampoline), a set of weights, a jump rope, or a walking pad.
  11. Work out on the Sue Grossman Greenway! There are currently 6 pieces of equipment to try.

Physical Activity Tips

  • Pick activities you (or your child) enjoy. There are so many options — walking, biking, skating, dancing, running, swimming, yoga, Pilates, strength training, and more.
  • Start slow and be realistic. This prevents injury and helps to keep you from getting discouraged.
  • Try new things so that you stay motivated.
  • Create your own “team” by participating with friends and family members so you can encourage each other.
