Fit Together in Action April Partner Highlights: Child Care Center Visits In anticipation of our Family Bicycle Rally on Saturday, May 4, I have been visiting our partner child care centers to demonstrate Strider balance bikes and emphasize the importance of bike helmet safety. The kids were very excited to try the Strider bikes and wear some very cool helmets. Spending time with these energetic youngsters and their teachers was a great way to reconnect and enjoy the outdoors. Fit Together in Action March News Partner Highlights: Jessica Stewart Visits Goshen Center School and James Morris School Having not visited two of our silver partners since the COVID-19 pandemic, it was very exciting to tour the Goshen Center School with school nurse Julia Turtoro. The school recently installed a book vending machine that takes special gold tokens which students earn by attending school events and for being respectful, responsible, or safe. Fit Together in Action February News Region 6 Elementary Schools Celebrate Health Students in RSD6 elementary schools have been learning about heart health in STEM classes. Grades K-5 are learning about the function of the heart, its importance to life, and things they can do to keep their hearts healthy and strong. Julia Turtoro the school nurse at Goshen Elementary School shares that the Students have been learning that some actions that they can take each day are to drink water, get enough sleep, and to MOVE, MOVE, MOVE. Fit Together in Action January 2024 News Torrington Public Schools New Year/New You Poster Contest Fit Together is collaborating with Torrington Public Schools to offer a New Year/New You poster contest to all students. Students can draw or create a digital poster with a health and wellness theme to align with Fit Together’s 5-2-1-0 message. Physical education teachers from each school are encouraging students to participate. Teachers will select two winning posters from each school. Fit Together in Action December News HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Wishing you a happy healthy holiday season! NEW Early Childcare Center Partner- Canaan Childcare Center Our new Fit Together partner, Canaan Childcare Center, received a grant through the Northwest Regional Early Childhood Alliance for the purpose of engaging parents into the school readiness community and to raise awareness of early childhood education needs. Fit Together in Action November News Healthy Changes Coming to Torrington Public Schools! Kristin Gagnon, the new Foodservice Manager for Torrington Public Schools, is supporting Fit Together’s mission by trying new healthier products and adding more fruits and vegetables to her recipes. Her team has created delicious new salads which include Boar’s Head meats for protein and local produce when available. Kristin is highly motivated to provide new healthy eating opportunities for students by encouraging them to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet and experience healthy foods they have not previous tried. Fit Together in Action October News Partner Highlight Winchester Walks Research shows that movement breaks can help awaken the brain by increasing blood flow and activating learning centers. Barbara Silvero, principal at Pearson School in Winsted, is incorporating these movement breaks every Monday through the “Winchester Walks” program. Teachers at Pearson and Hinsdale schools take their classes on a 10-minute walk up and down the hallways of each floor. Movement sessions are coordinated with each classroom to ensure all students get a chance to get in their steps. Teachers monitor and record steps for each session. In addition to the…

Fit Together in Action September News Fall Harvest at Vogel-Wetmore Courtney Quigley our Fit Together teacher champion has been busy harvesting with the students of Vogel Wetmore School who were welcomed back this year by their thriving school garden! Courtney reports “in the first few weeks of school, students have looked at bright sunflowers and buzzing pollinators. They have enjoyed the aroma of lavender, basil, and sage. The students have picked and enjoyed tomatoes, green beans, and peppers.
