Fit Together in Action April News Fit Together 5210 School Highlights-Torrington Kids Golf comes to the elementary schools Torrington Kids Golf: Fit Together’s Mini grant was used to purchase SNAG (Starting New At Golf) Equipment to introduce Torrington Kids Golf to all elementary school students districtwide. This new program provides opportunities to get physical activity while promoting the sport of golf which can be played from an early age and throughout an adult’s life. Fit Together in Action March News Fit Together 5210 School Highlights: Vogel-Wetmore Tracks Healthy Behaviors all Month Long Mr. Egan, a Vogel Wetmore PE teacher provides each student a monthly 5210 calendar. Students are encouraged to track their healthy habits in each of the 5210 strategies, which are then reinforced during class. All students who turn in a calendar signed by their parents receive an extra PE class that Mr. Egan holds during his free period. Snacks are good for kids because they help them stay focused at school and on homework, give them needed nutrients and keep hunger at bay. NWCT’s “Fit Together” Honors Gold Health Partners In northwest Connecticut, the Fit Together NWCT public health initiative is working to build the healthiest kids, families, and communities by helping to identify policy changes and environmental improvements in the cities of Torrington and Winsted that will help make the healthy choice the easy choice. Recently, Fit Together announced its first GOLD Partner recognitions honoring 10 sites in Torrington and Winsted for their positive impact on children’s health. The Theory Behind Let’s Go! Launched in 2006, Let’s Go! is centered at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, in Portland, and is implemented in partnership with MaineHealth. Let’s Go! is a childhood obesity prevention program that promotes evidence‐based strategies to boost healthy eating and physical activity among children through the age of 18. The program is rooted in the social ecological framework of behavior change—that people’s behaviors are influenced by many factors including family, friends, local surroundings, built environment and community. Fit Together Receives Grant From Hartford Healthcare

Fit Together Receives Grant from Hartford Healthcare Northwest Connecticut’s Fit Together public health initiative is poised to grow thanks to a five year, $500K grant received from Hartford HealthCare (HHC) as a result of their new affiliation with Torrington’s Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. Formed in 2011, Fit Together NWCT’s goal is to help schools, business and communities to change policies, systems and environments so that the default is the healthy choice by creating easier access to healthy foods and opportunities and desirable places for physical activity.
