
COACHING MORE THAN A SPORT
You've been called upon to coach because of your expertise in the sport. You've been selected to teach our young athletes the rules of the game, the Xs and Os of the sport and to push their skills to the next level. But in reality, as a coach, you're role is so much more. Players are trusting you to support them, to teach them and parents have put their faith in you to safely guide and look after them, to serve as a role model who has their best interest in mind. That includes instill in them proper technique, proper behavior and proper nutrition. They need to hear it from you that what we put into our bodies directly impacts what we are able to get out of our bodies on the field. Eating right, proper rest and always choosing WATER overt sports drinks is the foundation to a better, faster, stronger athlete and ultimately a better team!
HOW TO BECOME A 5-2-1-0 COACH
Bronze coaches agree to:
- Hold WATER ONLY practices- no sports drinks
- Deliver a WEEKLY nutrition message (supplied by Fit Together)
Silver coaches agree to: (in addition to doing bronze level)
- Encourage athletes to consume breakfast, lunch and a snack before practice
- Deliver handouts to athletes (supplied by Fit Together) and follow up regularly during warm ups and cool downs
- Communicate with families of athletes about program
Gold coaches agree to: (in addition to doing bronze and silver)
- Set specific goals with athletes (same message but tailored over time to each athlete) regarding before, during and after practice/games choices
- Appoint team leaders on the team to be athlete champions
- Sign up for and read Fit Together emails - sign up at bottom of page
- Work specifically with the Fit Together 5-2-1-0 coordinator on an ongoing program for your team contact jstewart@how2fitkids.org
- Commit to practicing 5-2-1-0 daily
