Blending Fun and Community

This summer has been filled with sunshine, smiles, and a whole lot of smoothie making! We were thrilled to partner with Our Culture is Beautiful by bringing our blender bike to their Fun in the Park summer day camp at Jiggs Donahue Park. The children and their guardians had a great time sampling the smoothies they created by peddling the bike with just a few healthy ingredients.

Jiggs Donahue Park is also the home of Torrington’s downtown community garden, which continues to thrive thanks to a grant secured by Lisa Candles of EdAdvance. The garden, which came to life six years ago with Fit Together funding, has flourished this summer, providing fresh, locally grown produce for the community. After the blender bike fun, we witnessed the children harvesting fresh vegetables to bring home to their families. It was the perfect blend of community and healthy lifestyles.

Worksite Wellness Tip National Sandwich Month

Sandwiches are the most frequently eaten lunches because they’re easy to make, versatile, and can be a convenient source of energy and nutrients. Plus, they are portable and don’t need utensils.

Preparing a healthy sandwich for your work lunch or your kids’ lunchbox doesn’t have to be complicated. Packing it with vegetables and lean proteins and opting for whole grain bread are simple switches that make a big impact while still keeping your meal tasty and enjoyable. Swapping out mayonnaise for hummus or avocado is a lighter option.

Double Corn Cakes

This month, not surprisingly, we’re sharing a recipe about corn because when August hits, it’s at its peak. While most of the corn we consume is on the cob (raw, steamed, or grilled), and even though that’s our favorite way to eat it, we also love to add it to salads, and especially to these corn cakes, which also have cornmeal in them. Did you know that corn is considered a vegetable, whereas cornmeal is considered a grain, even though they start out the same? Enjoy try these for breakfast, topped with maple syrup and yogurt. Sound better for later in the day? They also make a great side dish for lunch or dinner, topped with salsa.
